In all my years of being a global traveler and medical provider, I've never done a mission trip. Honestly, I have always been REALLY skeptical. I saw them as somewhat selfish acts to brag about going to "help" and wondered how much it actually benefited the community.
Fast forward to now: a pediatrician and his wife in Richmond, VA started organizing these trips to bring the pediatric services they ALREADY provide here in Richmond to less fortunate communities in Guatemala. Instead of going, volunteering, and then leaving with a SEE YA! Extra Mile Pediatrics is DEDICATED to return to the same communities every SIX MONTHS to make a substantial difference for the families treated.
I KNOW from having spent time in countries similar to Guatemala that resources can be scarce and I'm passionate about using my medical and Spanish speaking skills to help others. And, BEFORE YOU THINK IT, I believe HELP IS HELP. Yes, there are people who need help in the United States as well, BUT the starting points are not the same.
En fin, as a nurse practitioner you know I work a lot and stay busy. However, I want to volunteer my time and support these amazing medical professionals for these communities in the Southwest of Guatemala. I appreciate any support! This will be my first time going, BUT I truly believe in what Extra Mile Pediatrics' mission and plan to commit to this cause LONG TERM!
